Days of Smoke looks at war and Holocaust through the eyes of Hans Udet, a flyer involved from the earliest days with Hitler's air force. Across battlefields raging over much of Europe, Hans progresses from naïve young fighter pilot to ace of increasing rank and responsibility. But unfolding events pit Hans' love of the Fatherland against his natural compassion for humanity, after he saves a young Jewish woman from brutal assault. As growing feelings for Rachel sensitize him to the so-called "Jewish problem," Hans is torn between mounting disdain for the Nazis and his sense of duty to Germany.

Days of Smoke Mark Ozeroff Books

First and foremost, the most compelling reason to read this novel is for the gorgeous prose. Ozeroff knows the English language, and he enlists it lovingly but without being florid or verbose; he simply employs the right word for the right spot, and that includes the tight, effective dialog here.

This is the story of a German pilot, but it is also the story of a war. Without being didactic, Ozeroff encourages his readers to consider what it may have been like from the other side's point of view. When we love someone, we tend to overlook obstacles to our love, and Days of Smoke offers a glimpse into how this may be true when we love our country as well.

Ozeroff's characters and their situations ring true, and he uses them to spin a carefully crafted tale. Highly recommended--especially to those who love aircraft.

Days of Smoke Mark Ozeroff Books Reviews

I was so impressed with Days of Smoke for several reasons. First and foremost was the point of view in this book. It is written from the pov of a German fighter pilot during WWII. What makes that even more unusual is that this book is written by a Jew. It amazed me that Mark Ozeroff could sympathetically look at the world through the eyes of a German Luftwaffe pilot.
Their are a lot of flying details in this book, details about the development of planes during the war, and how each improvement changed the face of warfare and "dog fights." But those details were not boring. The book is so well written I was fascinated by each new development, each dog fight Ozeroff described. And I was amazed at the depth of his knowledge about these WWII aircraft.
When his main character, Hans Udet, witnesses a massacre of Jews in a Russian village, we feel his horror and how he begins to question all he has been fighting for.
